What's new

v10.3 [May 21, 2018]
- A few optimizations, improvements to the default settings, and minor bug fixes.
- WinEdt now provides an interface to MiKTeX Console (new in MiKTeX 2.9.6630). MiKTeX Console consolidates three different interfaces (MiKTeX Options, MiKTeX Update Wizard, and MiKTeX Package Manager which are now discontinued and have been removed from the default settings in WinEdt 10.3). If you rely on WinEdt's Interfaces tomaintain your MiKTeX installation it is recommended that you update your MiKTeX before installing WinEdt 10.3!
- On some shared network drives (UNC or mapped) asking for the existence of a single file can take 10 msec. and this makes WinEdt very unresponsive while it is checking if certain files (e.g. %N.pdf, etc.) exist in order to enable or disable menu items and toolbar buttons that depend on their existence. For optimal performance on such drives it is best to exclude them from this functionality by following the instructions in the Help for Preferences Dialog| File Status. However, WinEdt now detects situations like this and automatically reduces the frequency of "file existence queries" in order to improve its performance and responsiveness when working on projects located on slow network drives. In most cases WinEdt's performance will be reasonably good without making changes in the File Status detection (Preferences Dialog).
- Improved handling of situations when many opened files are modified or moved by an external application which could previously result in too many repeated warning messages issued by WinEdt. It is now possible to close all non-existent documents in response to a single prompt. The problem with numerous externally moved files was particularly bad for a few users that used UpdateDoc macro in Activate Document Event Handler! This macro now ignores non-existent documents in order to avoid a flood of messages about non-existent files every time you switch to another document. These improvements will be noticed by (advanced) users that use git (or similar).
- An oddity with some status line panels not being refreshed after reloading StatusBar.ini (or after resizing some panels) has been addressed. This mostly affected a few users that added extra panels or customized Status Line. Furthermore, SetPanel*(); macros now no longer require a call to UpdateStatus as they instantly update the modified panel.
- Command line switches -D and -d now produce global or local debug log file respectively. Previously only global log (%B\WinEdt.run) was supported and for most users this only worked when running WinEdt with elevated privileges. Switch -d produces a local log (%b\WinEdt.run) which is more useful as it does not require extra privileges.
- Filter Set specification now contains two new 0/1 properties BALANCED and NEGATED. They can be used to fix a minor oddity (imperfection) when it comes to highlighting of TeX commands proceeded by line breaks (\). They are also used to improve highlighting in WinEdt's macro scripts where it is now easier to catch improperly specified registers inside nested strings.
- WinEdt now allows PDF (forward) Search (with Sumatra) with .synctex and .synctex.gz. This makes it possible to work with Context and arara without changing the SyncTeX extension in the Execution Modes when changing the compiler. Few users (perhaps only one:-)) will notice this change.
- FormatString macro now allows extra parameters in order to produce aligned strings (left, right, and center) to the specified length with leading and/or trailing spaces as necessary. Help explains.
- WinEdt now checks parameters that contain %variables in configuration files while they are being loaded. This prevents serious problems that resulted when such parameters were loaded without any checking, only to detect the syntax errors inside them later when they are being used. For example, errors in REQ_FILTER value in the menu could result in serious problems that are not easy to fix (if a user made a mistake when specifying them). The same applies to CAPTION is status line, tree, and other items used inside frequent event handlers.
- A bug with (a seldom used) Full Width Selection AND Uniscribe Engine has been fixed. It now works as intended regardless of Uniscribe engine being enabled or not.
- Improvements to custom TeXify macros.
- Help has been updated with a few examples (e.g. how to insert multiple citations, etc.) to make functionality that is not obvious and easy to discover accessible to more users.
- WinEdt now recognizes \frametitle directive when collecting beamer frames in TOC (Tree or Gather) interface.
- Ins, InsText, InsChr, and InsChar macro functions now have an extra optional parameter. When non-zero the inserted text is highlighted in the specified selection mode (0..15). Helpexplains.

v10.2 [Feb 15, 2017]
- This build is compiled with the latest Delphi 10.2 compiler for Windows.
- Execution Modes Dialog now contains a field to specify DDE Service value for your version of Adobe.
- A few minor bug fixes and improvements.

v10.1 [May 18, 2016]
WinEdt 10.1 is now the official version of the program. It supports (customizable) auto completion and code folding, it is unicode/utf8-capable, and it integrates seamlessly with the latest accessories and TeX Systems (such as SumatraPDF viewer, MiKTeX and TeX Live). It has been extensively tested under Windows 10, 8 and 7 (32-bit and 64-bit) with different system dpi settings.
WinEdt is compatible with Windows High Contrast Schemes. It is compliant with Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act §1194.22. Furthermore, WinEdt is dpi-aware on system level: it comes with high-quality graphic resources at different sizes and at startup it automatically adjusts its GUI to high-resolution displays (without stretched or blurred graphics and text).
This version uses the powerful Uniscribe library in order to better handle Unicode and complex language processing (including support for bidirectional text). It also contains improved integration with the latest versions of MiKTeX (including proper support for MiKTeX's "Install packages on demand" feature when running TeX accessories in WinEdt console).

v9.0 [Aug 18, 2014]
WinEdt 9 is a Unicode (UTF-8) text editor built on WinEdt 8 sources
and compiled with Delphi XE6.
UPGRADING ISSUES:
=================
WinEdt 9 is installed parallel to WinEdt 8, 7, 6 or 5 and you can
continue to use an older version of WinEdt and possibly uninstall
WinEdt 9 if you prefer the old version.
IMPORTANT: If you already have WinEdt 5.x, 6 or 7 on your system
you cannot import your old settings directly into WinEdt 9! If you
already have WinEdt 8 installed the migration is easy: just execute
the command 'Import WinEdt 8 Settings' from within WinEdt 9 and
you're done...
Upgrading WinEdt 9 series from here on will be easy since your
local settings are preserved during upgrades. Executing the
command 'Upgrade Personal Configuration' will merge your custom
settings with the new defaults.
REGISTRATION: WinEdt 9 series uses the same Registration Data as
WinEdt 8, 7 and 6. You will, however, have to enter the data (Name
and Code) again in the Registration Dialog of WinEdt 9. WinEdt 5
users will have to pay an upgrade fee if they want to register
WinEdt 9 (see www.winedt.com for details).
------------------------------------------------------------------
WinEdt 9 [Build 20140917 (v. 9.0)]
==================================
- By popular demand the default WinEdt icon has been replaced with
a less transparent one in order to improve its visibility on
desktop, taskbar, or window title bar. WinEdt-Logo.ico and
WinEdt-Classic.ico are still available in %B\WinShell\Icons folder
(together with other icons used for filetype associations).
- Drag-and-drop from UNC Network drives now works (a bug that was
there in all previous versions has been fixed).
- Delete Working Files interface now uses a more reliable criteria
to determine which files are protected and will not be deleted
(only readonly, hidden, and system files are excluded)...
- A few minor enhancements to Gather macros...
------------------------------------------------------------------
WinEdt 9 [Build 20140815 (v. 9.0)]
==================================
- WinEdt now has a new configuration [IMAGE_RESOURCES]. Here is
where dpi-dependent Image Resources are managed:
This section manages dpi-dependent WinEdt Image Resources
The closest DPI selector <= screen resolution applies
Common Windows DPI (Magnification) values are:
96dpi (100%) - Old Low Resolution Monitors
120dpi (125%)
144dpi (150%)
192dpi (200%) - New Ultra High Definition Displays
WinEdt comes with pre-compiled Office 2013-style (high quality)
set of (over 500) icons in four sizes: 16x16, 24x24, 32x32,and 48x48.
They are available in %B\Bitmaps\Resources\WRLib32(dim).dll files.
As was the case in all versions since WinEdt 6 images were
prepared and created by Luca (based on the icon sets from Glyfz.com
in vector format). Months of hard work were needed to complete this
project.
Licensing Agreement with Glyfz.com does not allow WinEdt to include
these graphic resources directly as png images.
WinEdt also comes with %B\Bitmaps\Images folder where old-style 16x16
png files are stored.
If you want to use old icons you will have to enable the option
USE_SOURCE_FOLDER and disable the option USE_RESOURCE_DLL.
Similarly, you will have to enable the option USE_LOCAL_FOLDER if you want to
add private icons to the mix.
By default only the compiled dll graphic resources are used
(for performance and consistent appearance purposes)!
If you want to use icons at sizes different from the above you will have to
enable the option ALLOW_SCALING. Keep in mind that the quality of scaled
images is seriously reduced (especially when making them larger). When this
option is disabled and WinEdt encounters images of different size they are
either cropped or embedded (centered) in a larger image.
Memory consumption increases significantly (quadratically) with the dimension
or resources. Keep this in mind when modifying these settings!
TeX Symbols bitmaps are included at 125% and 200% magnification in
%B\Bitmaps\GUI125 and %B\Bitmaps\GUI200 folders. Default settings
should work for most users. You can add more images in your local folder
at appropriate resolution.
These bitmaps can be usually scaled-down reasonably well.
You can overwrite these values (for your resolution) in your private
settings if defaults do not reflect your choices...
- Some properties have been removed from MAIN_MENU, TOOLBAR and
GUI_PAGE_CONTROL sections because they are now managed in
IMAGE_RESOURCES.
GUI_PAGE_CONTROL:
SCALED_IMAGES
SCALED_BUTTONS
TOOLBAR:
DEFAULT_BUTTON_WIDTH
DEFAULT_BUTTON_HEIGHT
SEPARATOR_WIDTH
SEPARATOR_HEIGHT

v8.2 [Jun 17, 2014]
It supports (customizable) code folding, it is unicode-capable, and it integrates seamlessly with the latest accessories and TeX Systems (such as MiKTeX 2.9 and TeX Live 2013). It has been extensively tested under Windows 7, and 8 (32-bit and 64-bit). Furthermore, WinEdt 8.2 is compatible with Windows High Contrast Schemes and it is dpi-aware: it automatically adjusts its GUI to (ultra) high resolution displays.

v8.0 [May 16, 2013]
WinEdt 8.0 is now the official version of the program. It supports code folding, it is unicode-capable, and it integrates seamlessly with the latest accessories and TeX Systems (such as MiKTeX 2.9 and TeX Live 2012). It has been extensively tested under Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8 (32-bit and 64-bit).

v7.1 [Jan 15, 2013]
- A bug with reading UTF-8 configuration files on locales with multi-byte language settings (CJK) has been fixed. The problem was introduced with switch to Delphi XE3 compiler (Build 20130125).
- WinEdt now allows up to 2,000,000,000 lines per file (previous limit was 16,000,000 lines). However, do not expect stellar performance in huge files (different editors may be designed specifically to handle huge files).
There are now 32- and 64-bit versions of WinEdt 7.1. Users with 64-bit Windows can install either. Configurations and functionality of both versions are identical. The only difference is that WinEdt.exe is compiled as a native 32-bit or 64-bit Windows application, respectively. In the long run all applications will use a 64-bit platform but currently 32-bit applications run well on 64-bit Windows and not all applications offer a stable 32-bit version yet... 64-bit applications can launch 32-bit ones and vice versa. That's why both versions of WinEdt will work with either 32-bit or 64-bit version of MiKTeX. However, the 64-bit version of WinEdt cannot load 32-bit library for Word Web. Until a 64-bit version of this library is available users that want this functionality in WinEdt can only use 32-bit version.
If you already have WinEdt 7 installed you should install version 7.1 over the existing version of WinEdt 7 and use Options -> Maintenance -> Upgrade Personal Configuration command to merge your custom settings with the new defaults...
WinEdt 7 is a unicode editor. It is compiled with Delphi XE3 and heavily optimized in order to match the performance of earlier non-unicode versions of WinEdt...
Up-to-date documentation (including an updated Macro Manual and a Configuration Manual) is now consolidated in a single help file (available from the Help menu).
Preferences Dialog has been introduced to allow most common customizations (for users that are intimidated by the more powerful Options Interface and Configuration Scripts).
Graphic controls (like toolbars and menu items) now use transparent png images instead of bitmaps.
Default settings have numerous improvements (including enhanced compilation and preview macros, new highlighting schemes, etc.).

v7.0 [May 7, 2009]
WinEdt 7 is a Unicode text editor built on WinEdt 6 sources and compiled with Delphi XE. Users that already have an older version of WinEdt should read the following important information pertaining to upgrading:
WinEdt 7 is installed parallel to WinEdt 5 or 6 and you can continue to use an older version and possibly uninstall WinEdt 7 if you prefer the old version. WinEdt 7 can run simultaneously with an older version of the program. You should not attempt to install WinEdt 7 over the existing WinEdt 5.x or 6 on your system!

v6.0 [Oct 8, 2010]
-WinEdt's Interface (toolbar) has changed. A single button is now used to select and start the TeX Compiler of your choice. The drop-down menu allows you to choose from PDFLaTeX, LaTeX, XeTeX, TeX, AMSTeX, etc... Once you make your choice you can start the selected compiler by clicking on the button.
-The new interface also features context-sensitive Compile and Preview buttons. Their meaning for TeX documents can be configured through the Execution Modes Interface.
-Configuration Filters are used to make Menu Items and Toolbars visible or invisible depending on the configuration choice (MiKTeX, Tex Live, HTML, etc...)
-Console Applications are by default executed in WinEdt's own Console Window. This can be customized in the Execution Modes interface.
-Highlighting now allows specification of environment-sensitive background colors.
-Support for compiling MetaPost documents and Documented LaTeX (DTX).
- A problem with locating source files from MiKTeX log files has
been fixed
- A problem with silent install has been fixed
- Support for MetaFont has been added
- New functionality with aux directory has been added...

v5.6 [Jul 27, 2008]
New: WinEdt 5.6 (Beta 1)
WinEdt 5.5 is the official release of WinEdt. It is available from CTAN. This version integrates seamlessly with MiKTeX 2.5--2.7 and Adobe 5--8. It has a new TeX Live configuration compatible with TeX Live 2007 release. It has also been extensively tested under Windows Vista...
Beta version of the next release of WinEdt is now available for testing. To install WinEdt 5.6 follow the link below and proceed according to the instructions:
